The sixth-generation Mustang introduced a new 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine and an independent rear suspension (IRS) system for the EcoBoost model. It also featured a wider body, more passenger space, a new grille, and a lower decklid. Available engines included the EcoBoost, a 3.7-liter V6, and a 5.0-liter V8.
In 2018, the Mustang saw a minor redesign with revised engine options. The 2.3-liter EcoBoost replaced the V6 as the base engine, and the 5.0-liter V8 increased to 460 hp. Both engines received a new ten-speed automatic transmission. The Shelby GT350 was discontinued in 2020, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E, an electric crossover, joined the lineup.
The 2020 Mustang GT500 returned with 760 hp, while the 2021 Mach 1 featured the 5.0-liter Coyote engine. The 2022 Mustang offered new appearance packages, including the Stealth and California Special editions, with retro design elements inside. The 2023 model saw no significant changes as Ford prepared for the next generation.
